How to manage CBC grades in Kenya

The Competency Based Curriculum grades learners on performance levels rather than letter grades, and the levels change between primary and junior school. This guide sets out the scales, how marks map onto them, and how a school can keep CBC records that teachers can fill in and parents can read.

The four levels: pre-primary to Grade 6

From PP1 to Grade 6, and in KPSEA, learners are reported on four performance levels. Where a school assesses with marks out of 100, a common starting point is the scale below; many schools set their own ranges instead.

  • EE, Exceeding expectation: 80 to 100, 4 points.
  • ME, Meeting expectation: 50 to 79, 3 points.
  • AE, Approaching expectation: 30 to 49, 2 points.
  • BE, Below expectation: 0 to 29, 1 point.

The eight levels: Grades 7 to 12 and KJSEA

Junior school (Grades 7 to 9), KJSEA and senior school split each level in two, giving eight levels and finer points. Again, the ranges below are a common default, and a school may set its own.

  • EE1: 90 to 100, 8 points. EE2: 75 to 89, 7 points.
  • ME1: 58 to 74, 6 points. ME2: 41 to 57, 5 points.
  • AE1: 31 to 40, 4 points. AE2: 21 to 30, 3 points.
  • BE1: 11 to 20, 2 points. BE2: 0 to 10, 1 point.

Assess by strand, not only by exam

CBC asks teachers to record what a learner can do in each strand and sub-strand of a learning area, across the term, not just a single exam mark. Keeping those records on paper is where most of the work goes: one sheet per learner, per learning area, per term.

  • Keep the school's strands and sub-strands in one place, so every teacher assesses against the same list.
  • Record a level per learner per sub-strand as the work is done, not at the end of term.
  • Let the level, the points and the remark come from the scale, so two teachers never grade the same mark differently.
  • Check results before they reach parents, and keep a record of who changed what.

Schools with several levels

A comprehensive school runs pre-primary, primary and junior school side by side, so it needs both scales at once. Each class should follow its own level's scale, and the school should still be able to set its own ranges, points and remarks where it chooses to.

How Skulink does it

  • Both CBC scales are built in as defaults, and each class follows its level's scale: four levels for PP1 to Grade 6, eight for Grades 7 to 12.
  • A school can change the ranges, points and remarks, or set up its own scale, and choose which scale each class follows.
  • Teachers record learners against the school's strands and sub-strands, and the scale turns marks into levels, points and remarks.
  • The Director of Studies checks results before they are published, and every change is kept in the activity history.
  • Competency report cards print as PDFs, and parents read published results in the parent portal.

Common questions

Which curricula does Skulink support?
The Competency-Based Curriculum is built in, from pre-primary (PP1 and PP2) and primary (Grades 1 to 6) on the four performance levels to junior and senior secondary (Grades 7 to 12) on the eight. A school can also set its own ranges, points and remarks, and each class follows its level's scale.
How does Skulink handle CBC assessment?
Teachers record each learner against the school's CBC strands and sub-strands at the performance levels the school uses. These feed competency report cards that parents can read in the parent portal.
Can we use our own grading scale?
Yes. A school can set its own grades, points, ranges and remarks, and choose which scale each class follows, alongside the built-in CBC performance levels.
Who decides when results are released to parents?
The school. Class teachers hand results in as final, the Director of Studies checks them, and parents see them only once they are published. Every change to marks and publication is recorded with who made it.
