SMS alerts from school to parents

SMS still reaches every parent in Kenya, with or without a smartphone or data. The messages that matter most are the ones tied to a learner: an absence today, a fee balance, results published. Those are best sent from the school's records, so they go to the right parent at the right time without someone typing them.

Messages worth sending

  • Absence: the learner was marked absent at morning registration.
  • Fees: a payment was received, or a balance is due.
  • Results: the term's results and report cards are published.
  • Announcements: closing and opening dates, meetings and events.

Send from records, not from a phone

A bulk SMS sent from someone's phone needs a contact list kept by hand and goes out as a stranger's number. Sent from the school's records, a message goes to the parents the school has linked to each learner, carries the school's name, and is sent the moment the register is marked or the payment arrives.

Keep it short and useful

  • Name the school and the learner, and say what happened and what, if anything, the parent should do.
  • Send to the number the school holds for that parent, in +254 form.
  • Let parents choose which kinds of notice they want, so the important ones are read.
  • Keep an eye on the SMS balance before closing day, when the most messages go out.

How Skulink does it

  • SMS to Kenyan (+254) numbers, from the school's name where it has a sender ID, with the SMS balance in view.
  • Parents alerted when a learner is missing from the daily register, and when results are published.
  • App notifications and email alongside SMS, with each person choosing what they receive.
  • Announcements to a class, all parents, staff or everybody, and a parent portal with results, fees and attendance.

Common questions

Does Skulink send SMS to parents?
Yes. Skulink sends SMS to Kenyan numbers for attendance, fees, results and announcements, as well as app notifications and email. The school's SMS allowance is shown in the app, and each SMS beyond it costs KES 0.40.
How do parents get access?
The school records each parent's phone number or email and links them to their children. Parents sign in with that number or email, by a texted code, email or Google, and see only their own children.
What can parents see?
Published results and report cards, attendance, homework, fee balances, receipts and statements, school announcements and messages from teachers, all for their own children only.
Can a parent with several children use one account?
Yes. A parent sees all the children the school has linked to them, each with their own results, fees, attendance and homework.
